Vacation means….

Vacation means having no agenda or script. It is an essential break from the routine traffic patterns of our lives. It gives us a chance to see things from new perspectives, to discover new aspects of our relationships with family and friends.

As children, my siblings and I spent hours upon hours in the back seat of our Volvo station wagon, driving back and forth across the country (New York to California and back). We entertained ourselves, bickered, tickled each other, and negotiated the allocation of space repeatedly (driving our parents mad at times!). Wonderful memories!.

Here’s to summer and making space on the calendar for those unscripted, no-agenda times!!

Poetry

Perhaps we like poetry
For the things we don’t have to say… in so many words.
The unsaid things say plenty.
I mean, do I dare to eat a peach?
Like that rain-soaked summer afternoon,
When I was fourteen.
I wanted you to come.
And, to this day, I am glad you didn’t.

Fragrance of Late Summer

Oh the fragrance of late summer not yet autumn
Of pine trees and mountain streams and leaves
Of neighbors gathering to visit
With beer in hand and laughter and talk.
This is the fullness of late summer.
The rosy glow of mountain sky settling the day.
Parents play red light green light go and
Wear out their little ones for sound sleep.
Oh the fragrance of late summer not yet autumn
Of fresh laundry and meat on the grill.
This is the fullness of late summer.
The dance of an evening stroll in late summer not yet autumn.
